What to expect for your nbn FTTP upgrade
If you've been told your address is eligible for a free nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) upgrade, congratulations — you're about to get the fastest and most reliable connection type on the nbn network. Here's what the upgrade involves and what to expect at each stage.
What Is an FTTP Upgrade?
Many Central Queensland homes are currently connected to the nbn over Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) networks, which rely in part on the copper network to reach your home. An FTTP upgrade replaces that last section with fibre optic cable all the way to your premises, removing the copper network entirely and unlocking higher, more stable speeds.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Not every address can be upgraded yet — nbn is rolling FTTP out progressively across its footprint. Get in touch with us and we'll check whether your address is eligible for a free upgrade, and which higher-speed plans it unlocks.
Step 2: Choose Your Plan
To qualify for a free upgrade, you'll generally need to move to one of our higher-speed plans. We'll talk you through what's available at your address and what makes sense for your household before you commit to anything.
Step 3: We Book Your Appointment(s) with nbn
Once your order is placed, nbn will arrange the technical work required. Depending on your address, this will involve an installation appointment. Note that someone over 18 will need to be home to provide access to the inside and outside of the property.
We'll keep you updated by by email as these appointments are confirmed, and let you know if another visit may be needed for more complex installs.
Step 4: Installation Day
On the day, the nbn technician will typically:
- Run new fibre cabling from the street to your premises
- Attach a small utility box to an external wall
- Install an nbn connection box inside, usually near your existing equipment
- Test the new connection to make sure everything is working correctly
Most installations are completed in a single visit of around 3 to 4 hours, though more complex properties may take longer or need a follow-up appointment.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Because this work happens on a live network, there can be brief service interruptions while the technician isolates power or completes testing. It's a good idea to have a charged mobile phone on hand just in case.
- Your existing connection stays active until the new fibre connection is ready, so you shouldn't be left without internet.
- The technician will discuss the best location for your nbn connection box with you before installing it.
- Please make sure pets are secured and access to work areas — inside and out — is clear for the appointment.
Step 5: Activation and Switch-Over
Once the physical installation is complete and tested, we'll switch your service over to the new fibre connection. You don't need to do anything on your end — we'll let you know once you're live on FTTP, and if a new modem/router is needed for your plan, we'll arrange that with you beforehand.
Will My Price Change?
Free FTTP upgrades relate to the connection type, not automatically to your plan price. If moving to a qualifying higher-speed plan changes your monthly cost, we'll make sure you know exactly what to expect before your order is placed — no surprises on your bill.
